In efforts to help make homework time a bit more productive, I wanted to share some thoughts with you. With the addition of typing this year, and keeping our journal, math and reading, it can seem like a lot and I wanted to break it down a bit more.
Primary Assignments Each Night
*Reading: 20 min.
(This can be in the form of your child reading to you, having them spend time on RazKids or TumbleBooks, etc.)
*Math: 15-20 min.
(The homework that is sent home is a review from the day. Sometimes you will find that your child doesn't come home with a sheet
because we either got through the review in class or they were not ready to independently practice. The homework is designed to be 20
min. or less. If you find your child struggling after the 20 minutes, you can stop and just make a note on the sheet- we will be sure to
revisit it in class.)
* Word Work: 5-10 min.Monday: Cut & Sort
Tuesday: Sort & Sentences
Wednesday: Sort & ABC Order (SKIP IF THERE IS A 4 DAY WEEK)
Thursday: Study Sort & Glue in words
This makes up the typical homework each night :)
Additional Assignments (only 2-3 times a week)
*Typing (starting in November)
(This isn't an assignment that needs to be turned in, but rather practice and reinforcement. We practice in class, but in order to help
build the skill, it is important to practice outside of class. On the D70 Student connection page, you can click on the grade level and log
on to any of the keyboarding sites- this was in Friday's class email. The logs that went home are just helpful tools for you to use or
keep by the computer to help your child keep track of the practice. )
As always, I understand that different activities and therapies come up, so it is not always possible to do everything. Please place a primary focus on doing reading and math each night. Since your child may finish math early, please try to pick either journal or typing. It also may be helpful to break up the assignments so they do not have to sit too long at one time.
If they have an after school activity, they may want to do journal there, and then they can work on the others at home. Since the children do not get homework on the weekend, they may take this time to focus on typing practice as a break from the weeks work.
Please do what you feel is best for you and your child as far as a schedule. Let me know if there seems to be a problem, and I'm happy to look at modifying or helping with the workload.
