It was a great 4-day week in room 118! I apologize in advance for this long email!
The children enjoyed kicking off our Sports-themed Character Counts! week with some fun activities. We got to listen to a story from Dr. Schumacher that helped display what is means to show good character! Mr. Knapp also came in to read to us about Howard B Wigglebottom and how he needed to work on being a good sport. We made special pennants that will be displayed around Rockland that tell how we are ‘sporting good character!’ We also wrote letters to children up at a school in Waukegan that will receive school supplies donated by Rockland.
I’m trying something new this year called Remind 101. This is a tool where I can send out quick texts to you about events/reminders/activities. For instance, I would send out a message the night before picture day or if a school spirit day is coming up. To sign up to receive these messages follow the steps below:
Smart phone: Go to https://www.remind.com/join/mrssundhs and follow the prompts.
Also, I will be submitting our classroom Scholastic book order on Sep. 30th. You can order online by following these steps:
Ordering online is fast and easy:
REGISTER at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs
ENTER the Class Activation Code: HDKRW
CHOOSE from thousands of print titles, value packs, and Storia eBooks SUBMIT the order and I’ll receive it!
Math has been moving along nicely. The children have worked on their 2’s and 10’s this week in math group. Additionally, they have been identifying patterns in multiplication and strategies to solve word problems. They were very excited to learn about variables this week. We had fun coming up with problems and using variables to represent unknown values. Please encourage your child to be practicing math facts in the evening. The more they practice, the easier they will become. You can use flash cards (some will be coming home shortly). I will also be posting some more online practice activities, too! Next week we will work on our 9’s.
In reading we have focused on understanding how characters’ actions contribute to the sequence of events. We are still reading the chapter book The Case of the Gasping Garbage. The children are recognizing character traits and use this information to make predictions about what may happen in the text. The skill that we have been placing lots of focus on is answering questions using text-based evidence. This is a big shift for the children so we are working on finding the best strategy to help them with this skill.
We also tried out a ‘flipped classroom’ approach during our reading rotations. This is where I prerecord a lesson and the children can watch it and then do an activity. The benefit of this is that children can go at their own pace and still get the same instruction.
Next week I look forward to spending two afternoons reading with the children for their Fountas and Pinnell benchmarks. This will be helpful information for me to tailor their instruction even further.
Personal Narratives are the focus of writing in the classroom. We have examined a sample of a personal narrative and used the sample to identify key elements. We are using the 6 traits to guide us. This week we made up movements and phrases to help us remember what each trait is. To see our movements, click here: http://mrssundhsclass.weebly.com/class-movies.html
Our social studies unit on maps and the community is coming along well. Reading various maps can be tricky, so we are working on paying attention to the map key and title as a guide. Next week we will start a project to identify where Libertyville is in the world. We’ll go into details about the hemisphere, continent, country, state and county.
Thank you to Colin’s dad for being our Mystery Reader today! We really enjoyed the stories. If you didn’t make it to Curriculum Night and want to sign up for Mystery Reader, please do so here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a6fuPi0RXG04oVzV_3nXiRjOBzePCdp2IDdqwjF6loU/edit?usp=sharing
STAR reports are coming home today. This is very helpful data to collect three times a year to monitor student growth. If your child indicated a need for intervention on this benchmark, an interventionist will perform a diagnostic test in the area of concern to see if it was a function of the test or an area needing attention. This takes time since it is a one-on-one assessment, so you will be notified once this is completed.
